AbstractThis work describes an experimental investigation of humidity effects on the self-ignition and burning characteristics of wooden dowels, for applications in related studies of fires and prescribed burns. The effects of water on self-ignition times, flaming , smoldering, consumption rates and percent consumption rates of pinus samples were analyzed. It was verified that water presence influences all phases of drying and burning. Total time of drying and burning, until a given mass fraction of the sample is left, is not significantly affected. There is an exponential increase of self-ignition times and a quadratic increase of flame extinction times with water content increase. Consumed mass fraction during smoldering is maximum, about 20%, for dry samples and decreases linearly with humidity levels. Percent mass consumption rates during flaming have parabolic profiles and attain peak values just before flame extinction.
